Adopting a pet can be a transformative experience for families and children. And proof of this is Father João Paulo Araújo Gomes, from Caruaru, Pernambuco (PE), Brazil, who has been rescuing abandoned animals for over a decade and integrating them into religious celebrations to find them new homes.
The initiative began in Gravatá (PE), when the priest encountered a precarious shelter caring for 97 animals. Moved by the situation, he decided to take action: he started bringing the animals to church, where, between prayers, he promoted responsible adoption. The faithful, touched by the gesture, began to welcome dogs and cats, transforming lives and homes.
In addition to special masses, the São Sebastião chapel was adapted to become a true animal sanctuary. During celebrations, the pets can move around freely, receiving affection, food, and water. This action not only rescues animals from abandonment but also raises community awareness about the importance of caring for and adopting them.
