Know some forbidden foods to be given to dogs and cats

Pets are an essential part of our lives, and taking care of their health is a responsibility that all owners take seriously. Part of this care involves proper nutrition, but sometimes we can make mistakes without realizing it. Some foods that are harmless to us can be extremely harmful to our furry friends.

In this article, we will highlight the 10 foods that are forbidden for dogs and cats, so you can keep your pet safe and healthy.

Chocolate is one of the most dangerous foods

We start our list with an item that many people love and almost adore without limits: Chocolate. It contains theobromine, a substance that dogs and cats cannot metabolize properly. Consuming chocolate can lead to severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and even seizures. In more severe cases, it can be fatal. Avoid leaving chocolates within reach of your pets and never offer them intentionally.

Coffee

Just like chocolate, coffee and other caffeine-rich foods are extremely toxic to dogs and cats. Caffeine can cause serious heart problems, agitation, and tremors, so keep your coffee and other sources of caffeine out of your pet’s reach.

Grapes: An unresolved mystery

Although the reason is still not fully understood, grapes and raisins have been associated with severe cases of kidney failure in dogs. Even in small quantities, they can be very harmful. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, so don’t take the risk, prevent your pets from accessing these fruits.

Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic contain compounds that can cause anemia in dogs and cats. Symptoms can range from vomiting and diarrhea to more serious issues like weakness and difficulty breathing. That’s why it’s recommended to avoid having them consume the same food that you and your family eat daily.

Avocado

Avocado contains a substance called persin, which is extremely toxic to dogs and cats and can cause long-term digestive problems, including vomiting and diarrhea. Make sure your pet does not consume avocado or foods containing this fruit.

Fats and Fried Foods

Foods high in fat, such as fried foods and fatty leftovers, can quickly lead to gastrointestinal problems in dogs and cats. Pancreatitis is a serious condition that can be caused by excessive fat intake. Keep your fatty foods and snacks away from your pets.

Alcoholic Beverages

Do not allow your pet to have access to alcohol under any circumstances. Alcohol can cause intoxication and central nervous system problems in pets. Symptoms include vomiting, lack of coordination, and even coma. That beer at home alone or with friends? Keep your glass with any type of alcoholic beverage away from your pet.

Milk and Dairy

While many animals have a reputation for loving milk, the truth is that most dogs and cats are lactose intolerant. Dairy consumption can lead to abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and gas. If you want to spoil your pet with a dairy treat, opt for pet-specific products that are lactose-free.

Cooked Bones

While bones may seem like a natural choice for our canine friends, cooked bones pose a significant danger. They can splinter and cause injuries to the mouth, throat, or digestive tract. Additionally, small bone fragments can become lodged and cause intestinal obstructions. If you wish to give bones to your dog, choose raw bones and always supervise.

Salt: Less is More

Excessive salt is harmful to pets, just as it is to humans. Overly salty foods can lead to sodium poisoning, resulting in increased thirst and urination, as well as tremors, seizures in severe cases, and long-term hair loss. Avoid giving salty foods to your pets.

Keeping our pets safe and healthy is a priority for all responsible owners. Avoiding dangerous foods is a fundamental part of this care. Make sure your home is free of these 10 forbidden foods for dogs and cats, and always consult your veterinarian if you suspect your pet has ingested something harmful. With knowledge and caution, you can ensure a long and happy life for your faithful furry companion.
